Arunachalam – The Sacred Hill of Lord Shiva

Arunachalam (also called Arunachala or Annamalai) is a holy hill located in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the most sacred sites in Shaivism (devotees of Lord Shiva). The hill itself is considered to be a form of Lord Shiva, and it is believed to represent the Agni (fire) element among the five elements (Pancha Bhootas).

At the foot of Arunachalam hill is the Arunachaleswarar Temple, a grand and ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of Arunachaleswarar. His consort, Parvati, is worshipped here as Unnamulai Amman.

Key Highlights:

Spiritual Importance: Great saints like Ramana Maharshi have meditated here. The hill is known for giving peace, enlightenment, and liberation (moksha) to sincere seekers.

Girivalam (Giri Pradakshina): Devotees walk around the sacred hill (14 km) barefoot during full moon nights, believing that each step taken with devotion washes away sins and brings blessings.

Karthigai Deepam Festival: A huge fire lamp is lit on top of the hill every year during this festival, symbolizing Shiva appearing as an infinite column of fire. Lakhs of devotees gather to witness this divine event.

Eternal Fire: Arunachalam represents Shiva as a pillar of fire, signifying infinite light and truth.
