This is made with a Shetland sheep fleece and black batting, 100% wool, no leather. The sheep is presumably still being petted by kids in Illinois somewhere.
Wet felting is a magical process involving hot water, soap, and agitation. Wool fibers have tiny scales that can interlock in these conditions (which is why wet wool shrinks in the dryer).
If you want to try, I used this tutorial, which is a PDF you can download.
