Judges 11:1-3. Jephthah was the son of Gilead, the grandson of Manasseh through a prostitute. Gilead had other sons and when they were adults, they kicked out Jephthah because they didn’t want to share the inheritance with him. Jephthah joined a band of outlaws.
Judges 4-13. The Ammonites were coming to fight Israel. They took land from Gad, and Reuben and now were trying to get the Land of Gilead. The tribe asked Ephraim for help, but they said no. So they went to ask Jephthah. “Why are you coming to me now?” He said. Now that you need help you come. Jephthah wanted an apology. The people of Gilead said, “If you win, you can be our leader”. Jephthah gives glory to Adonai, that if He defeats the Ammonites, then he would be their leader.
He first tried to negotiate with the Ammonites. They accused Israel of taking their land and Jephthah explains that they didn’t take the Ammonites land, but only the Land that HaShem gave them. He told them keep the land their god Chemosh gave them,
Judges 11:27. HaShem defeats the Ammonites.
