Artist and researcher Ralph Borland shares what he will be working on during his artist residency with the EthicsLab at the UCT Neuroscience Institute. Over the next few months, he’ll collaborate with scientists and ethicists to explore how art can open new ways of thinking about health, technology, and ethics.
As part of the residency, Ralph will also develop proposals for new artworks and a future artist-in-residence programme at the institute. In this talk, he introduces the ideas shaping his work — including plans for a large light-based sculpture in the Neuroscience Institute — and reflects on past projects such as African Robots & SPACECRAFT and Bone Flute, functional objects that communicate with audiences by blending art, technology, and social commentary.
This presentation offers an early glimpse into how transdisciplinary collaboration can enrich both artistic and scientific practice.
