KOUNTZE - Fpx 4 reporter Jessica Crawford was in court for details and reaction to the sentencing of a man convicted of attacking a female police officer and hitting her in the face with an unopened beer can, then straddling her and repeatedly striking her in the head with his fists.
Judge Steve Thomas sentenced Frank Banks to the maximum 20 years in prison Thursday morning for Assault on a Public Servant and 2 years for evading. He'll have to serve about half of the 22 year sentence before he becomes eligible for parole.
In November of last year, Banks hit Kountze Police Officer Kiera Linney in the face with a 16 ounce unopened can of beer outside a convenience store, then straddled her and repeatedly struck her across the head with his fists.
Linney had been patrolling the area and looking for a man who reportedly ran out of the store with beers. He attacked her after she tried to question and detain him.
She tried to turn her face away from him and Banks struck Officer Linney across the left side of her head and face with "great force."
The two began struggling and she was forced to the ground, at which time Banks straddled Linney and began using his fists to strike her repeatedly in the face and head. She called on her police radio to report the assault.
