Was Strauss right in his assessment? Judge for yourself in three different Chopin-recordings made by Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860-1941):
Etude in G sharp minor opus 25 no. 6, "Thirds" (rec. 1923)
Waltz in E flat major opus 18, "Grand valse brillante" (rec. 1928) 2:08
Polonaise in E flat minor opus 26 no. 2 (rec. 1930) 7:08
Needless to say, these historic recordings can not transmit Paderewski's unique stage presence...
