The Cost of Living Childless | True Lives

From 1950 to 2021, the global birth rate has declined by
half.
This documentary explores the declining birth rate in the
UK, as well as the rest of the world.
By 2050, it is predicted that over half of the countries in
the world will have fertility rates that are below their placement rate of 2.1. The replacement rate is the
number of children that each couple must have on
average, to maintain a steady population.

The piece will draw on the perspectives of people from
different generations to gauge the changes in societal and
economic factors of having a child.
The Baby Boomers:
Patsy and Michael. A married couple from the Baby
Boomer Generation who have 4 children. For them, the
joy of having children outweighs the cost.
The Millennials:
Social media influencers, Khareem and Jasveen. A young
couple who would like to have children, but feel they are
not able to largely due to the cost of living.
Drew. A young woman with no desire to have children.
She doesn’t like the sound of becoming a mother and the
life that would follow.
Having children is a choice that an increasing number of
people are deciding against. But this has implications for
society.
