They go by many names: video essayists, commentary channels, overly opinionated pretentious yappers. YouTube is home to a genre of video known as the "video essay"; a genre dedicated to analysing everything from film and TV to pop culture and social media trends. Since video essays tend to look outwards for their object of analysis, today we're going to turn the magnifying glass inward, by analysing video essayists, video essays and their audience. Together, we shall uncover the psychological and philosophical motivations for watching video essays, and the problems associated with them.
