Made an external pack frame, by laminating strips of 3/32" thick walnut, using a maple mold, with a total of nine layers on the verticals, and seven on the horizontals, which were overlapped. Some friends and family didn't understand what that meant, so, here's the video. Had to do it one at a time for precision and pressure. Then cleaned up with a chisel, sanded 180 grit to 400, put on a coat of Thompson's Clear WaterSeal, sanded again with 400, as the grain raised, then a coat of Howard's Orange Oil and Beeswax. Used a stitching awl to sew on shoulder straps from an old USMC ILBE. Then heavy duty nylon thread and a standard needle for the webbing. Weaved the Cordura belt on with some purple webbing, and well, I must say, it works rather well. Fits nicely. Spread the 135 lb load of pig eggs (burlap sand bags wrapped in duct tape) well. Went for a 8 mile hike yesterday with a 50 lb load, and well, I really like it, so you'll have to excuse the dancing. Sorry about the speed, this is a six hour video compressed to fifteen minutes. Feel free to ask about any details.
If you know a way to stain nylon pack straps and Cordura belt, without needing a stove for acid dye, please let me know. The mismatch is bugging me. Thought about leather, but, it's expensive and extremely labor intensive.
I claim no rights to the music. They are Brand New's Degausser, The Deftones' Sextape, David Kitt's cover of Dancing in the Moonlight, Etta James's At Last, and The Beatles' Twist and Shout.
