ജനിതക വിളകള്‍ - Genetically Modified Crops - Dr K M Sreekumar.Humankind has been genetically modifying organisms for hundreds of years through selective breeding thereby improving wild grasses into rice, wheat, maize and millets and fury wild wolves into docile obedient dogs etc. With the advent of modern tools of science we could do it is a far more selective and useful manner. So the scientists have created insulin producing bacteria, golden rice, seedless grapes and many more.
Despite the rapid adoption of GM crops by farmers in many countries, public controversies about the risks and benefits continue. Many academicians and regulatory bodies have reviewed the evidence against risks concluding that commercialized GM crops are safe for human consumption and the environment. Plenty of studies show that GM crops give higher yields and cost savings in agricultural productions. However, many argue that the evidences about impacts are mixed and curse the GM food as "frankeinfood". We will examine the details in this talk
