A day spent on the Washington coast with good friends. We fished the morning incoming tide for Redtail Surfperch, then waited for the afternoon high tide to dip Surf Smelt.
Large female surfperch are found during July and August. They are large because they are pregnant, and give live births during these months.
Surf smelt usually come into the gravel shoreline to reproduce in the Summer months. They appear in the surf near high tide, but they have also came in on either side of high tide. The key to watch for is bird activities. They either congregate at the beach and/or dive to feed. Another sign is a seal roaming close to the surf zone. However, on this day, the birds were not present. High tide was about an hour away, and I wanted to watch the surf for awhile. Once I spotted a few in the breaking surf, a frantic race to dip our limits before they disappear.
