It's World Snake Day, and this year's theme is Respect, Don't Fear, so we want to reacquaint you with Oregon's only venomous snake, the Western rattlesnake, which is having a rough go of it in the Willamette Valley ecoregion where it is a species of greatest conservation need due to widespread habitat loss.
To do this, we partnered up with the High Desert Museum to feature one of their ambassador animals for ODFW Regional Diversity Biologist Kaly Adkins to showcase some of the most-important aspects of these crucial critters in both Western and Eastern Oregon.
Kaly also highlights the differences between Western rattlesnakes and Gopher snakes, which mimic rattlesnakes in several ways but which are non-venomous.
