In the Beijing opera "Speaking and Singing with Facial Masks," it sings: "Du Er Dun with blue face, stealing imperial horses; Guan Yu with red face fights in Changsha; Dian Wei with yellow face; Cao Cao with white face; Zhang Fei with black face, making a clamor..." We know about Guan Yu, Cao Cao, and Dian Wei from the "Three Kingdoms," but who is Du Er Dun?
In Beijing opera facial masks, each color represents a different character and personality. Red symbolizes loyalty and valor, such as Guan Yu; black represents integrity and seriousness, like Zhang Fei; white signifies deceitfulness and suspicion, like Cao Cao; yellow represents bravery and impulsiveness, like Dian Wei; blue signifies forthrightness and assertiveness, often portraying righteous outlaws, like the character Du Er Dun in this context.
Du Er Dun's Character in Beijing Opera
Du Er Dun is a character from the Beijing opera "Stealing the Imperial Horses" and also appears in storytelling series like "The Interlocking Trap," detective novels such as "Peng's Case," and "Shi's Case." Due to variations in different creators' interpretations and artistic expressions, there are differences in Du Er Dun's background and fate across various versions. Here, I'll base his portrayal on the storytelling series by Shan Tianfang, "The Interlocking Trap," while incorporating elements from other literary works portraying Du Er Dun.
