FiFi is a rescue cat that we adopted as a kitten from our local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). She was found under a car in the parking garage of an apartment complex by a good samaritan who fortunately took her to the SPCA. Understandably, FiFi was extremely timid and fearful of people, movement, loud noises, etc. She was practically feral to a certain degree. Our future baby was placed with an adoptive family who did a great job of socializing her with humans and other pets. However, she did remain wary (hissing and hiding) of new interactions and is sometimes that way (minus the hissing) to this very day.
I will admit that FiFi was not my first choice for adoption but for one reason or other the other kittens were unavailable. The adoption coordinator informed our family that despite FiFi making progress with the adoptive family it would take time for her to get acclimated to another family. She also stated that we were under no obligation to keep her and could bring her back anytime during the two week trial period. It took about 10 days to build up FiFi's confidence and trust to interact with us. Our patience and tenacity paid off and was well worth it. Since that time we've had so much fun with her and I think she feels the same about us. FiFi is the third rescue pet I've adopted over the years and they've been some of the best companions we've ever had. A rescue pet may not be the choice for everyone but my family has been fortunate and able to help some wonderful pets find their forever home.
