1. Definition
Logical volume management (LVM) is a form of storage virtualization that offers system administrators a more flexible approach to managing disk storage space.
A physical volume must be created, followed by a volume group, and lastly, a logical volume.
2. Physical Volume (PV)
These are the actual physical disks or partitions (e.g., `/dev/sda1`, `/dev/sdb2`) that are used for storage.
You must have a device as a physical volume before using it in an LVM system.
Without physical volumes, you cannot create Volume Groups or logical volumes.
3. Volume Group (VG)
Volume groups are storage pools made up of one or more physical volumes.
A PV can only be allocated to a single VG.
4. Logical Volume (LV)
Logical volumes can be created with various sizes on a volume group. They can be resized and managed independently of the underlying physical storage.
5. Advantage of LVM
The biggest advantage of LVM is that both logical and physical volumes can be created, deleted and resized online, without any restarts.
Any number of disks and partitions can be unified into a big one, or a single physical disk can be quickly split into many partitions of any size.
Quick Recovery: With snapshots and the ability to clone logical volumes, recovery from data loss or corruption can be faster and less complex.
Easily Expandable: LVM makes it easy to expand storage as your needs grow by simply adding new physical volumes to the volume group.
Performance Improvement: LVM can stripe data across multiple physical volumes, improving read and write performance.
