The ancient Epicureans advocated hedonism, but not the kind you would like. As one of the schools reacting against ancient hedonism as well as Plato and Aristotle, the Epicureans taught a self-sufficient life of simplicity, friends and limited desires. Dr. Johnson discusses the major ideas of the school, including materialism, hedonism, ataraxia and the "swerve" of their atomism

Dr. Johnson teaches philosophy at Georgia Tech. He is the author of Paradox at Play: Metaphor in Meister Eckhart's Sermons by Catholic University of America Press. It includes many sermons never before translated into English.
