This is an experience you can only do in a couple of places in the world—Malta and Australia—and it was absolutely mind-blowing.
​I'm a big fan of unique travel experiences, but nothing prepared me for the sight of these gentle giants swimming gracefully around me. Their immense size and incredible speed are something you have to see to believe. They are truly the "Ferraris of the ocean."
​Want to have this amazing adventure yourself? Here are all the details you need to know before you plan your trip to Malta:
​The Experience: You'll be swimming with hundreds of Atlantic Bluefin Tuna inside a massive, open-sea enclosure. The trip usually takes around 2 hours, including a speedboat ride to the pens and plenty of time in the water with the fish.
​Location: The tour operator is located in Mellieħa, Malta. The specific diving company I went with is called Oh Yeah Malta. You'll depart from the Tunny Net Jetty.
​Cost: The ticket price is €50 per person.
​Availability: This trip is highly dependent on weather conditions and availability. The company I used, Oh Yeah Malta, typically runs these trips only on Tuesday and Thursday during the season, but this can change. It's crucial to check their website or call them in advance to confirm the schedule. If the weather is not good, the trip will be cancelled for safety reasons, so always check before you go!
​What to expect: You'll be provided with a mask and snorkel, and you'll jump into a massive, netted "sea aquarium" with the tuna. You'll be able to get up close to these incredible fish and watch them swim at incredible speeds. It's safe, and the tuna are used to people being in the water.
