Join us for a seminar with Dr. Girard, who will share how his
team is using advanced engineering and AI to study whether
long-term eye pressure stretches, pinches, twists, or bends
axons in ways that cause glaucoma damage. Their findings
could transform understanding of the disease and lead to new
diagnostic tool.
About Dr. Girard: Dr. Michaël J.A. Girard is an Associate Professor at Emory University (Ophthalmology and Biomechanical Engineering)
and heads the Ophthalmic Engineering & Innovation Laboratory (OEIL). His research lies at the intersection of AI and
biomechanics, with applications in ophthalmology, particularly optic neuropathies such as glaucoma, as well as
myopia and neurological disorders. He is the founder of Abyss Processing Pte Ltd, a MedTech start-up providing 3D AI
solutions for glaucoma diagnosis and prognosis. Dr. Girard has authored 160+ papers, delivered 80+ invited talks,
secured over $10.5M in funding, licensed 5 technologies, and received 40+ grants and 20+ awards. Ranked among the
world’s top 2% scientists (Elsevier-Stanford, 2024) and #4 globally for optic nerve research (Expertscape, 2024), he has
also trained 10 postdoctoral fellows and 13 PhD students.
