친서 외교, 북미 협상 재개로 이어질까?
North Korea has unveiled a photo of its leader Kim Jong-un reading a letter sent by U.S. President Trump on Sunday... and the White House has confirmed that Trump has indeed sent a letter to Kim Jong-un, although the exact time of the letter being sent is unknown.
This follows Kim Jong-un's letter sent to Trump about two weeks ago, which Trump described as a 'beautiful' letter.
These seemingly friendly gestures come four months after the breakdown of the Hanoi summit since which nuclear talks have been largely stalled.
Today we go in-depth on 'letter diplomacy' as well as the chain of diplomatic events lined up for this month surrounding North Korea's nuclear issue.
For that Dr. JUNG Dae-jin, Research Professor at the Ajou Institute of Unification joins me tonight.
Kim Jong-un described the letter as being "of excellent content" and said he "would seriously contemplate the interesting content". What do you think is the "interesting content"?
Trump's letter comes as a reply to Kim's letter sent two weeks ago which Trump described as 'beautiful'. The timing of the North Korean media showing the photo of Kim reading Trump's letter, though, is noteworthy. It comes two days after Xi Jinping returned home from North Korea, and just days ahead of the G20 summit and Moon-Trump summit. How do you analyse the timing?
The 'letter diplomacy' between Kim and Trump is likely to lead to nuclear negotiations between North Korea and the U.S.? Washington's top nuclear envoy Stephen Biegun expresses hope for working-level talks to begin.
N. Korea: U.S. has to come up with 'new calculations'
U.S.: Sanctions will continue until FFVD.
Stephen Beigun recently: Pyeongyang-Washington understand the need for a flexible approach to denuclearization.
Does this signal possible change in Washington's stance?
Recent developments come after about four months of a lull in nuclear talks. Why the sudden rush of events recently?
Biegun expressed hope that working-level talks would begin following the exchange of personal letters between Trump and Kim. Some remain skeptical about the top-down approach of nuclear negotiations citing the collapse of the Hanoi summit. Your thoughts?
The G20 summit set for this Friday, Saturday and a Moon-Trump summit will follow. Although officials at South Korea's presidential office have said there are no plans of a trilateral summit between the two Koreas and the U.S., word has it that Moon-Kim-Trump might meet at Panmunjeom. What's your take on the chances of that happening?
