Welcome to part two of our incredible hiking trip to the fairytale landscape of the Elbe sandstone mountains. This time, we will be sharing with you our sunniest day, on and around Bastei and its bridge.
Rain or shine, these bizarre and majestic mountains just take the breath away from you, in more ways than one, and just keep on giving.
We just love nothing more than to be at one with nature and will jump at any opportunity, no matter how small or how short-lived, to take Miley our little motorhome off for an adventure in the wilderness.
Saxony Switzerland in Eastern Germany ticked all the boxes with its scenic views, rugged towering sheer cliffs and challenging hiking trails and, having so enjoyed the Pfaffenstein Nature Reserve the day before, we were left eager for more. We donned our backpack and walking boots, and set out for more outdoor adventure.
Although we knew that the Bastei rock formation attracts more than it’s fair share of visitors, we felt that it would be rude to visit the area and not pop in, so that’s where we set off to on day 2.
Sit back and let us take you with us to explore the tamed, and less tamed, rugged world of the Elbe sandstone mountains, in the hope that we can tempt you to take a trip there yourselves.
Look out for our next video: Day 3 hike to Sebnitz and the Kuhstall Felsentor. This is a giant sandstone archway, second only to the Pravčická archway, Czech Republic, in size. Although the weather was less friendly that day, it made for some highly dramatic and entertaining scenery.
Costings for day 2:
Elbe ferry crossing - €3 return per person
Bastei bridge - free to roam
Camping Königstein - €34 per night plus electric
Train journey from Königstein to Kurort Rathen - free with tourist pass
ice cream and drinks - €20
Google Earth, Airbus, Data, SIO, NOAA provided the point-to-point animation from Wiltshire to Königstein, and the fly-to and orbit of Bastei bridge.
AllTrails provided the map of the Elbe region.

OUR CHANNEL:
We are Graham & Karen. We first started our adventures together while at uni in the 90s with a 2-person tent. and '74 VW Beetle. Then, as family arrived, we moved on to trailer tent and caravan followed by motorhome.
We have travelled much of the British Isles, lots of Western Europe as well as visiting New Zealand and Canada.
Our current love is a Benimar Mileo 201 which at only 6 metres makes him (Miley) an ideal length for moving about and parking up.
With just the two of us, we have time and capacity to further our adventures. We want to take you with us as we enjoy Mileo not just for holidays or weekends, but day trips too.
We could not finish there without a quick mention of our other great love, our little Harley motorbike. In the past it has come with us on a trailer, so that we can use it for taking us up on the winding mountain roads, and in time it will come again.
With food allergies and intolerances, we eat out sparingly and cautiously, but always sample the flavours of the area through our trusty table-top barbecue (CADAC) - rain or shine.
