My Multiple Sclerosis Story: MS diagnosis & onset, from wheelchair to walking | Vanessa Nastasia

On October 8th, 2012 I started the journey into one of the hardest times of my life. I woke up to numbness in my left hand only for it to progress to complete hemiplegia of the left side virtually over night. I was diagnosed with Tumefactive MS at the age of 26. I had to learn to walk again after 4 months in a wheelchair and excessive weight gain due to paralysis as well as poor diet. I was depressed so I ate. I ate all the wrong things, all the unhealthy things. These habits became a cycle until I decided i needed a change...
*FUN FACT: I also ended up getting shingles while in hospital because of my compromised immune system due to high dose steroids Thankfully it did not last long because I was in the hospital and was treated quickly.
I have not had a relapse. or experienced any pain since my onset and diagnosis in hospital. The only major symptoms I deal with occasionally to date are:

Fatigue (less to date- was worse closer to onset)
Muscle cramps/ soreness/atrophy/ tingling (rare)
Migraines
occasional depression/ anxiety

In case you miss it anywhere in the video or I may have forgotten to mention it, I'm going to list my treatments and medications here:
Solumedrol (in hospital): (Steroid)
Prednisone tablets (in hospital): (Steroid) to wean off of Solumedrol
Plasmapheresis (in hospital): to provide healthy plasma exchange
Rebif:(4 years at home): MS treatment medication self injections
**excessive physiotherapy & exercise**

As much as I believe in the power of medicine, I do believe the harsh medicines were needed for me in the beginning to get the inflammation and activity under control. I started to realize that my direct lifestyle(eg. diet, exercise, mental health) can and was also affecting my condition and quality of life long term. So I made the choice to come off my medication and work on my lifestyles choices as my form of treatment. So far that works for me! Don't take it from me alone, what works for one may not work for another, but we all only benefit from healthy choices. Do your own research on what works and what will work best for YOU. Be honest with yourself about your choices but recognize that YOU hold all of the power YOU need.
I spent all these years afraid to tell my story out of fear. Fear of judgement, fear of the unknown, or whatever. I'm done with that. You got this MS Fam!
