Making Apple Head Dolls; Old-Time Folk Craft

I created some old fashioned dried apple dolls using dehydrated and shrunken apples for the heads. This craft was a Native American practice originally. For the apple heads, I first carved faces on my apples and I added lemon and salt preservatives. Then I dehydrated the apples, some in dehydrator and one I hung to dry. With the apple heads drying, I next made the wire skeleton bodies (armatures) for the dolls by wrapping scrap fabric around the recycled wire from notebooks that I had shaped into my body form. I finished up my old time dolls by making them clothing and accessories. It was a fun folk craft!
