First we must understand how wrinkles are formed. When our facial muscles contract, a chain reaction of neurotransmitters take place. Synaptic vesicles fuse with plasma membranes and specifically target snare proteins in the nerve terminal. Once this fusion occurs, muscle contraction is activated, thus causing wrinkles to appear in our facial expressions.

Botulinum toxin, commonly known as botox, is a type of polypeptide composed of a light and heavy chain. Once injected, botox enters the synaptic vesicles and follows the same course of chain reactions to reach the nerve terminal. Once inside, the light chain of botox breaks free from the plasma membrane and deactivates snare proteins from triggering muscle contraction. This causes temporary paralysis of facial muscles and prevent wrinkles to appear in our facial expressions.
