Lying dormant for 80 years, the American Liberty Ship SS Richard Montgomery was just 13 months old when sunk by bad weather in August 1944. Crossing the Atlantic bound for the Continent loaded with bombs, she moored in the Thames Estuary 50 miles from Central London. After off-loading some bombs, a fierce storm flooded all the open cargo holds with 1400 tons remaining as the ship sank. They are still there.
