KrasAir can trace its history to Krasnoyarsk Aviation Enterprise which operated airline service from Krasnoyarsk as local Aeroflot division. Airline was privatized in 1993 with the Krasnoyarsk regional government retaining majority ownership. Airline operated scheduled passenger and cargo service to points in Russia and former CIS states from its base in Krasnoyarsk. Under leadership of its CEO Boris Abramovich, Krasnoyarsk Airlines became instrumental in creation of AirBridge airline alliance, where airlines with complementary networks coordinated schedules and exchanged customers similar to western alliances such as StarAlliance or OneWorld. AirBridge alliance was in 2005 renamed AiRUnion and comprised of Domodedovo Airlines, Samara Airlines, Omskavia and Sibaviatrans in all of which KrasAir had stake. KrasAir acquired stake in Hungarian flag carrier Malev in 2007. Airline ran into severe cash flow problems by summer of 2008 and was grounded because of its fuel and airport handling debts. Although Russian government initially stepped in and helped to resume operations of AiRUnion, the cash flow problems persisted and culminated in October 2008 when all flights of AiRUnion were grounded. Most of its routes were taken over by other Russian carriers including Aeroflot, S7 and Rossiya. Airline entered bankruptcy proceedings in July 2009 and is to be liquidated.
