The eruption of the Thera volcano, around 1620 BC, is estimated to have been one of the deadliest natural disasters of the ancient world.

Blamed for the collapse of the Minoan civilisation, some historians believe the eruption inspired Plato's descriptions of the sinking of Atlantis. To this day, there is still evidence of the major volcanic activity that changed the dramatic landscapes of what is now present-day Santorini forever.
