Knitting For Peace 10th Anniversary
“Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven…”
These words, found in Matthew’s gospel and used as part of the offertory invitation in the Book of Common Prayer are simply that… an invitation to share the gifts that God has given to each of us. It has been my experience that our churches are filled with gifted-ness… the gift of song, the gift of organizing, the gift of reaching out and caring, the gift of hospitality, each of which, along with so many others, making the church the community of faith that inspires and welcomes and nurtures all of our giftedness.
This week, we mark the 10th anniversary of the Knitting for Peace group, a gathering of knitters who, until the Pandemic, gathered faithfully every Saturday morning. It is truly a ministry that offers multiple gifts.
If you have been in the Cathedral on a Saturday morning, you have likely heard the clicking of needles… as well as laughter, conversation and fellowship as relationships are built with all who have gathered… the gift of community.
The fruits of the labours of this community are shared with those in need, those who are thankful for that warm, hand-knitted toque, or scarf, mittens or socks… all crafted with love and in the knowledge that someone’s quality of life will be better because of this ministry… the gift of caring.
We, as a Cathedral family, are thankful for all who find community in this ministry of Knitting for Peace and who have shared their gift freely for these past 10 years. We especially offer our thanks to Heather Clark for her tireless efforts that keep this group connected, even through this time of pandemic… we wait with anticipation to hear again the sound of those knitting needles and the community formed around them, always in the knowledge of the source of that light and that gift… a sign of God’s presence in our world.
