The age of AI slop is upon us and no one is safe – not even books. Oh no, is that the ChatGPT em dash??
Don’t worry, AI was not involved in the making of this video, but it did play a part in the making of its topic: the infamous AI-generated reading list published by the once unheard-of Chicago Sun-Times about a week ago.
This and another ridiculous book list (Dazed’s ‘10 books that are dating red flags’) got me thinking about the way in which traditional media has been both castigating social media users for engaging in performative reading and ruining literature altogether, AND doing its best to capitalise on the new popularity of books.
Where is book content heading now that mainstream media outlets- the same entities who reserve the right to dictate what “real readers” look like - are churning out clickbaity and AI-generated articles?
