Japanese researchers have used Weddell seals to survey the waters under thick ice sheets in Antarctica. These seals have been equipped with 580-gram head-mounted measuring devices to record water temperatures and salt levels. This research and technology can help trace the animals’ behavioral patterns and ecology even in harsh environments. The data collected from the seven seals shows one of them traveled over 600 kilometers and another has descended to a depth of 700 meters. The scientists also learned that warm seawater from the upper layer in the ocean made its way to Antarctica and brought creatures like Antarctic krill. #Seals #Krill.
