I stood near the edge of the property, nursing a glass of sparkling water and watching my family work the crowd. My father held court near the main tent, telling stories about his career as a civil engineer. My mother, Susan, fluttered between groups of guests, making sure everyone felt welcomed and entertained. My older brother Marcus and younger sister Bethany circulated with their spouses, the picture of successful adult children.
