Creación de la Tierra (1972)
Piece created from vocal material of creation chants of the U’wa ethnic group in Boyacá, Colombia. In Nova’s work, U’wa words and voices are interwoven without exoticism. These indigenous voices are continually transformed, at times past the point of recognisability. In this way, the voice of a community to which Nova does not belong and a language which is not her own take on a great symbolic significance as they are amplified within a culture that has marginalised them for centuries. With this work, Nova claims the right to coexist as peers and the need to exist without exclusion. --Ana María Romano
