Jury Duty- Why they ask questions

The panel of people who are brought in for jury duty are not automatically assigned to a case. There is a 'deselection' process - in other words those who are seated at the front of hte group will most likely become the jury for that case unless they are stricken by the judge or attorneys. To decide who is excused from further participation the attorneys for each party in the case ask questions of the group and of individuals. That process is called the voir dire.
