The castle was built in 1150 by Styrian Ottakers to defend against invaders and to protect a promiment transportation route along the Enns River in Upper Austria.

Castle Historic Timeline:
1150 - The castle was built by the Styrian Ottakars
1170 - first documented mention
1186 - Babenberg new owners after the Ottakars died out
1252 - Dietmar v. Steyr receives the castle in exchange for the city of Steyr
1418 - The Losensteiners leave the castle ; Management by carers
1550 - The castle was abandoned as the administrative center and began to decline
1692 - Family v. Auersperg inherits the castle/ruins from the extinct Losensteiners
1905 - State of Upper Austria buys completely desolate ruins and saves existing buildings
