Meet the Hr1 Ukko-Pekka 1009 locomotive, which was the largest and most powerful passenger steam locomotive on the Finnish railways.
The Hr1 Ukko-Pekka 1009 locomotive hauled a scheduled heritage train on October 16, 2021: Tampere - Tesoma - Nokia - Siuro (train MUS1942) and back (train MUS1943). This video is from the train stops at the Nokia city and Siuro village stations.
Höyryveturimatkat 1009 Oy is responsible for operating and marketing the steam train. The company's office is in the Kouvola city, where the Hr1 Ukko-Pekka 1009 locomotive has its own stall at the Kouvola depot. The locomotive is operated on all the railway tracks in different parts of Finland for approximately 10,000 km per year. You can join scheduled heritage train trips, or charter your own steam train.

Nowadays, only this Hr1 Ukko-Pekka 1009 is in traffic in Finland. However, most of the Hr1 Ukko-Pekka locomotives have been preserved in other ways.
The Hr1 Ukko-Pekka 1009 locomotive was restored at Pieksämäki's old locomotive depot under the ownership of Nigel Sill from London who financed and directed the restoration. The locomotive was re-approved for railway traffic in 1993. On May 22, 1993, Hr1 1009 made its maiden journey of its new season from Pieksämäki to Joensuu and back.
The Hr1 Ukko-Pekka 1009 locomotive represents the locomotive production of the shortage period after the Second World War. Because of this, it has aluminum numbers and number plates instead of brass ones. In other respects, 1009 is a typical representative of its series.
The Hr1 class (original classification P1 before 1942) was the largest passenger express steam locomotive built in Finland. The class's nickname was "Ukko-Pekka” after the President of Finland Pehr Evind Svinhufvud.
In the 1930s, there was a need for faster and heavier express trains in Finland, and the Hv1–Hv3 classes were not powerful enough to fill the need. Lokomo Oy in Tampere built first two prototypes, and after successful trials 20 more were built. Total 22 Hr1 locomotives were built between the years 1937–1957. Lokomo Oy built 14 and Oy Tampella Ab 8 locomotives. The Hr1s were numbered 1000–1021.
The Hr1 locomotive's wheel arrangement is 4-6-2 and the maximum permitted speed is 110 km. The mass of the locomotive is 93 tons, but in working condition its total mass is increased by about 63 tons of water and coal.
The Hr1 was built for coal firing, but during the coal shortage after the war in 1945, birch wood was used as fuel. Larger chimneys needed for extinguishing wood sparks were temporarily fitted.
The Hr1s were the most important express steam locomotives of the Finnish State Railways (VR, Valtionrautatiet) until 1963, when diesel locomotives started to replace steam. Their use ended officially in 1971, but two Hr1s equipped with roller bearings were brought back to use for a short time in the spring of 1974. One locomotive, 1005, was a participant in the worst peacetime railroad accident in Finland, the Kuurila accident, in 1957.
