Steyr Evolution (1864 - 2001)

Steyr's automotive journey began in 1918, transitioning from its origins as a rifle manufacturer founded by Josef Werndl in 1864. The company hired engineer Hans Ledwinka in 1917, leading to the creation of its first car, the six-cylinder Type II "12/40," in 1920.


In 1934, Steyr merged with Austro-Daimler-Puch to form Steyr-Daimler-Puch. During this period, the company produced notable models like the Steyr 50, known as the "Steyr Baby," which was considered Austria's answer to the Volkswagen Beetle.


During World War II, it produced military equipment for the Axis powers. After the war, Steyr-Daimler-Puch pivoted to peacetime products. Notable vehicles included the Puch 500 , the Haflinger and Pinzgauer, and the Steyr-Puch G, co-developed with Mercedes-Benz, which evolved into the Mercedes G-Class.

The company gradually split up in the late 1980s and 1990s: motorcycle production went to Piaggio, the truck division to MAN, and the G-Class production to Magna Steyr. Though the original company no longer exists, its legacy lives on in many brands and vehicles still in use today.
