Nancy's Favorite Tools: Rotary Cutters

Nancy continues the series about her favorite tools. This video is about her favorite rotary cutters. She loves the Olfa ergonomic rotary cutters. Squeeze to slide out the blade to cut and release to pull the blade back in. There is also a locking mechanism to make sure the blade doesn't slide out when it is in storage or pack for a quilt retreat.
Nancy loves when the Olfa rotary cutter is set down, it is shut. When she teaches, everything stops when she see an an open blade on the table. Practice safety first when using rotary cutters.
There are four different sizes of Olfa rotary cutters. The 18 millimeter is just too small for much. The 28 millimeter is perfect for paper piecing or clothing patterns.
The next two rotary cutters are the workhorses in Nancy's toolbox. The 45 millimeter is the most common rotary cutter.
She likes the Olfa 45 millimeter because it is ergonomic and opens and closes as you use it. It can also be use with decorative wavy or pinking blades. Take the blade off by taking the nut off the back of the rotary cutter and then the washer. Let the screw with the blade and yellow disc slip off the rotary cutter to your work surface. The yellow disc with the Olfa rotary cutter is what makes it possible to use the decorative blades without buying another rotary cutter. Take off the yellow disc and carefully remove the blade.
Have all the parts set in a line ready to go as you prepare to put on the new blade. Open up a new pack of blades and carefully take out one blade. Nancy likes to buy the 10 pack of blades because she goes through them quickly. Set the blade on the screw first. Then place the yellow disc on top, then the rotary cutter, the washer with the scoop up, and then the nut. Tighten firmly but keep it loose enough to let the blade roll. The blade can be put on either side of the rotary cutter so it can be used right handed or left handed. Most of the different brands of blades are interchangeable and can be used with most rotary cutters.
The last rotary cutter is the 60 millimeter (the pizza cutter). This rotary cutter can go through sixteen layers of fabric. It can cut through four layers of batting too.
