John wrote his gospel to inspire non-Christians toward belief, but he wrote his letter to encourage Christians toward spiritual assurance.

Assurance plays an important role in our relationship with Jesus Christ. Spiritual certainty does not lead to arrogance, bigotry, or wishful thinking. It leads to confidence in God, discernment of deception, and love for others.

In his final sermon in this series, Pastor Chuck Swindoll focuses on 1 John 5:13–21, drawing out a spiritual truth to cling to and a final warning to remember.
