M1 Vs SM58

Hi There! In this, my first review video, we'll have a look at the RØDE Microphones​ M1 and See how it stacks up next to the Shure SM58! Can't wait to see what you think - I've used both of these a ton and I'm a big fan of them both!

Summary: From microphones like these you want good sound (or as good as you can get), durability and in this case affordability - Bang for your Buck. The SM58 satisfies all this criteria and has sat in this part of the market reasonably unchallenged for a long time. BUT the RØDE M1 gives it a run for its money (literally) for a mic that shouldn’t cost you more that £70 ($100) it comes including a lifetime warrantee (or it did when I nought it). It has solid build quality and sounds lovely... And lets face it it’s all black finish it gorgeous.

You can hopefully hear that the Microphones really have their own character and sound and I think It’s really up to the end user to decide which they prefer. The M1 to my ear sounds smoother where as the SM58 has a bit more bite to it. Both Have very good build quality and feel very sturdy. However the XLR connection on the SM58 feels slightly more solid - BUT This could be due to the sheer amount of use my RØDE M1 has had over the last year! The SM58 has a bigger back log of replacement/ second hands and accessories but that’s only because the 58 has been around as an industry standard for decades. The RØDE M1 is the cheaper of the two and includes one of Rodes fantastic warrantee plans, costing about £70 ($100) compared to SM58 at about £90 ($125). I also prefer the handling noise on the M1 over 58 but again that is quite subjective I just really don’t like the handling noise on the 58. Both microphones have a switch mic version available.

I’d love to see how these microphones sound side-by-side on some other instruments and sound sources etc. so maybe there could be a part 2 and perhaps feature some other microphones for comparison?

So what do you think?! I’m not saying we should all abandon the 58 it is the industry standard for a reason but M1 certainly gives the old boy a run for it’s money and deserves our consideration! It could be worthwhile adding the M1 to your microphone arsenal - you’ve can never have enough gear and for £70 ($100) you’re getting a great sounding, solid built dynamic mic with an epic warrantee - it’s definitely worth a shot ;)
