Fleeing a village that branded her a “monster” (and a flesh-hungry night creature that killed her master), a former slave stumbles into a decaying castle—only to find its owner is a silver-haired, sword-wielding vampire with a penchant for staking creatures outside his door… and a talent for threatening her life.

At first, he’s a terror: he presses cold steel to her throat twice, lets his castle reek of rot, and drowns his grief in wine until he passes out in his own vomit. But when she risks her safety to clean his infected wounds, feed him (sort of), and wash his disgustingly soiled coat, something shifts. He starts leaving her bowls of warm frumenty, lets her sleep in his dead mother’s silk-sheeted bed, and even mumbles an apology after breaking his promise not to harm her.

She’s confused—this vampire hates humans, yet he’s giving her a roof (and fancy dresses from his mom’s closet). He’s even more confused: he’s supposed to be a lonely, murderous creature (his dad is Dracula, after all), but he can’t stop staring when she tends to his injuries… or panicking when she mentions his dead parents.

Now, she’s living in his castle (under his “supervision,” he insists), digging through his family’s monster-hunting books to figure out what he really is. He’s alternating between snapping at her and silently watching her fold laundry. And neither of them will admit it: in a world that wants them both dead, they’re starting to need each other—even if he still threatens to rip her throat out… and she still thinks he’s a weird, sad drunk with way too many capes.
