Measuring the Influence of Humidity on Material Properties

The impact of humidity on a material’s properties and performance during processing, storage, and in final form is a growing area of interest for manufacturers across many industries.  A few areas of investigation of this impact include material selection and failure analysis of layered materials used with electronic circuit boards, morphological changes in pharmaceuticals, and examination of material properties as a function of storage conditions for foods and pharmaceuticals. Instrumentation that can measure and monitor structure and property changes under controlled temperature and humidity environments provide valuable information to material researchers.  This talk will discuss two such instruments, the new Discovery Sorption Analyzer, which monitors changes in weight, and the new Discovery TMA 450 RH, which detects changes in dimension, both under conditions of controlled temperature and humidity.  The instruments will be described in detail and numerous applications will be discussed.

Gray Slough is currently a product specialist in the Thermal Product group at TA Instruments. Dr. Slough received his BS in physics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1983 and his Ph.D. in condensed matter physics from the University of Virginia in 1990. He joined TA Instruments in 1998 as an applications scientist. Within the Thermal Product group he works to help define and develop the thermal analysis product line at TA, and provide technical support to both internal and external customers.
