The Serpur Fish Mela is a very old traditional festival, with roots going back roughly 150–200 years according to local historians and media reports. It began as a community gathering around the end of the Bengali month of Poush, coinciding with Poush Sankranti (Makar Sankranti) — an auspicious transition marking the end of winter.

📍 Where It Started
• Originally, the fair was organized by a zamindar (landlord) named Mathura Babu in the Manumukh area of present-day Moulvibazar Sadar. The site was at the confluence of the Manu and Kushiyara rivers — places rich in freshwater fish.
• Due to river erosion about 50 years ago, the fair moved to its current location in Sherpur, Khalilpur Union, on the banks of the Kushiyara River near Moulvibazar town.

🎉 Cultural and Social Significance
• Though it started linked to a Hindu seasonal festival (Poush Sankranti), over generations the fair has become a secular and inclusive regional tradition — celebrated by people of all communities across Sylhet and neighboring districts.
• Locals consider it an annual highlight of the winter season — a place not only for buying rare and large fishes but also for social gathering, cultural exchange, and economic activity.

🐠 What Happens at the Mela
• Traders bring freshwater fishes of many varieties, including boal, ruhi, katla, mrigel, kalibaus, baghai (bagha-aira), chital, and others — often rare or large specimens caught from rivers and haors (wetlands) across Sylhet, Sunamganj, Habiganj, and beyond.
• The fish are displayed and sold wholesale and retail, with some rare, huge fish sometimes priced extremely high (e.g., bigh fishes selling for lakhs of takas).
• It sometimes includes other stalls and fair activities, such as local handicrafts and food, giving it the feel of a broader community fair.

🗓 Timing and Duration
• The event traditionally starts a day or two before Poush Sankranti (mid-January) and lasts about two to three days — attracting thousands of buyers and fish enthusiasts.

• Over years, the fair has grown from a local gathering to a major regional event, drawing traders and visitors from across Bangladesh. It has also faced modern challenges — for example, interruption once during the COVID-19 pandemic when large gatherings were restricted.

স্থানীয় ইতিহাসবিদ এবং গণমাধ্যমের প্রতিবেদন অনুসারে, শেরপুর মাছ মেলা একটি অতি প্রাচীন ঐতিহ্যবাহী উৎসব, যার শিকড় প্রায় ১৫০-২০০ বছর আগের। এটি পৌষ মাসের শেষের দিকে একটি সম্প্রদায়ের সমাবেশ হিসেবে শুরু হয়েছিল, যা পৌষ সংক্রান্তির (মকর সংক্রান্তি) সাথে মিলে যায় - শীতের সমাপ্তির একটি শুভ পরিবর্তন।

• মূলত, বর্তমান মৌলভীবাজার সদরের মনুমুখ এলাকায় মথুরা বাবু নামে একজন জমিদার এই মেলার আয়োজন করেছিলেন। স্থানটি ছিল মনু এবং কুশিয়ারা নদীর সঙ্গমস্থলে - মিঠা পানির মাছে সমৃদ্ধ স্থান।
• প্রায় ৫০ বছর আগে নদী ভাঙনের কারণে, মেলাটি মৌলভীবাজার শহরের কাছে কুশিয়ারা নদীর তীরে খলিলপুর ইউনিয়নের শেরপুরে তার বর্তমান অবস্থানে স্থানান্তরিত হয়।

• ব্যবসায়ীরা বোয়াল, রুহি, কাতলা, মৃগেল, কালিবাউস, বাঘাই (বাঘা-আইরা), চিতল এবং অন্যান্য সহ বিভিন্ন ধরণের মিঠা পানির মাছ নিয়ে আসেন - প্রায়শই সিলেট, সুনামগঞ্জ, হবিগঞ্জ এবং তার বাইরে নদী এবং হাওর (জলাভূমি) থেকে ধরা বিরল বা বড় নমুনা।
• মাছগুলি পাইকারি ও খুচরা বিক্রয় করা হয়, কিছু বিরল, বিশাল মাছের দাম কখনও কখনও অত্যন্ত বেশি (যেমন, লক্ষ লক্ষ টাকায় বিক্রি হয়)।
• মাঝে মাঝে এতে অন্যান্য স্টল এবং মেলার কার্যক্রম অন্তর্ভুক্ত থাকে, যেমন স্থানীয় হস্তশিল্প এবং খাবার, যা এটিকে একটি বৃহত্তর সম্প্রদায়ের মেলার অনুভূতি দেয়।

🗓 সময় এবং সময়কাল
• ঐতিহ্যগতভাবে এই অনুষ্ঠানটি পৌষ সংক্রান্তির (জানুয়ারীর মাঝামাঝি) এক বা দুই দিন আগে শুরু হয় এবং প্রায় দুই থেকে তিন দিন স্থায়ী হয় — যা হাজার হাজার ক্রেতা এবং মাছ প্রেমীদের আকর্ষণ করে।
