Is The Mid-Engine Porsche Cayman Really Cut Out for Rally? Proving Everyone Wrong: Rallye Cayman Ep1

►Off-road Porsches have become somewhat of a trend in the last decade or so so much that even Porsche offers a new 911 purpose built for the loose stuff. But none of those builds, whether the 992 Dakar or the typical "Safari" build, live up to the rally legends Porsche won within the seventies and eighties. Instead, they're expensive toys that allow owners to play rally driver. But we couldn't help but wonder what a real modern Porsche rally car would look like, so we set out to build one ourselves.

Welcome to the Porsche Cayman Rallye Project presented by Hengst. Over the next few weeks, you'll get to watch FCP Euro engineers Nate Vincent and Alex Nelson as they take a used and abused 987.1 Cayman S and transform it into a gravel-spitting FIA-approved stage rally machine. Along the way, they'll have to navigate reinforcing a chassis meant for smooth tarmac rather than abusive terrain and 50ft jumps, re-engineer the suspension, and deliver it to SEMA within just seven months.

In episode 1, you'll see the Cayman in its original form as a road-going machine as Nate takes it on a trip to Team O’Neil Rally School in New Hampshire. There, Nate and the car will be put through the basic rally paces, tackling the snowy skidpad and slalom course before getting up on a lift for a closer inspection. Will the Cayman prove to be a perfect starting point, or is the FCP Euro team in for an enormous challenge? Watch along and find out!
