Botanical nomenclature is guided by the International Code of Nomenclature for Algae, Fungi, and Plants (https://www.iapt-taxon.org/nomen/main.... The starting date for botnical nomenclature is 1753, Linnaeu's Species Plantarum. Names are based on type specimens. Type specimens are not necessaity "typical" for the taxon they describe but must never be used for a taxon that excludes the type specimens from its circumscription. The rule of priority is an important criterion in botanical nomenclature. The PhyloCode is a new, rank-free classification system where the names are tied to monophyletic groups, not to type specimens. Taxonomy is meant to demonstrate our understanding of evolutionary relationships. An example of how names are applied is provided by a discussion of Mimulus, Diplacus, and Erythranthe. Additional examples include the genus Aster and Boraginaceae.
