What is Computer Network | Types of Computer Netwrks- LAN, MAN, WAN | Advantages & Disadvantages

Computer Network: When two or more computers are connected in such a way that information can be transmitted among them then it is known as a computer network. Based on the area the networks are mainly of three types- LAN, MAN and WAN.
Types of Computer Network:
Local Area Network: The network that connects the computers within a small area such as a building, few neighboring buildings, school, office, university, colony etc. is called a LAN
Metropolitan Area Network: The computer network that covers larger area than a LAN, such as a city or a town is called MAN.
Wide Area Network: A wide area network, or WAN, occupies a very large area, such as an entire country or the entire world. A WAN can contain multiple smaller networks, such as LANs or MANs. The Internet is the best-known example of a public WAN.
Main Advantages and Disadvantages of Computer Networking
Advantages of Computer Network:
1. Information sharing: One of the most important uses of networking is to allow sharing of information. Users can send text files, spread sheets, documents, presentations, audio files, video files, etc. to other users.
2. Hardware (peripheral) Sharing: Hardware components such as printers, scanners etc. also can be shared.
3. Internet Connection Sharing: A single Internet connection can be shared among many computers in a network instead of purchasing separate connection for every computer.
4. Uses of network based applications: Uses of web browser, email client software, chat application, audio & video calling, cloud computing etc. is another advantage of computer networking.
5. Keeping Backup of Data: We can keep backup of our important data or information in some other computer or servers. So, we can restore them if required.
Disadvantages of Computer Network:
1. Buying the computer cable and servers can be very expensive.
2. Viruses can spread to other computers throughout a computer network.
3. People can hack other computers.
4. It encourages people to become dependent on computers.
5. It comes with the risk of security issues.
