“Perhaps only China would dare to build this railway.” This was the high praise given to the Chinese engineering team by the director of the Angolan Railway Bureau at a ceremony in 2015.
You might think this statement is a bit exaggerated, but the Chinese construction team did indeed spend a full 10 years and $1.8 billion to complete this 1,300-kilometer railway.
Normally, a railway project of this scale could be completed and opened to traffic in China in about three years. However, the difficulty in building this railway lay in the fact that the construction area along the route was riddled with over 6 million landmines.
Many of these landmines remain unexploded, and the detonation of even one could trigger unimaginable chain reactions. It is precisely because of this that this railway had remained incomplete for over 100 years.
But the question is, why did China take such a huge risk to help Angola build this railway? What is the current status of this railway?
