A breakthrough in cancer treatment is offering new hope for patients battling multiple myeloma, a typically aggressive and painful form of blood cancer. Dr. Matthew Ulrickson, Medical Oncologist at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center, joined Arizona Horizon to discuss promising results from a new CAR-T immunotherapy treatment that may significantly extend survival—and even potentially cure—the disease in some patients.
The study, involving 97 patients, showed that a third of participants who received the immunotherapy remained cancer-free after five years—an unprecedented outcome for multiple myeloma. The treatment uses a patient’s own white blood cells, genetically engineered to target cancer cells, and marks a potential paradigm shift in blood cancer care.
