ACT TWO (Césare Pugni)
Altdorf Square: the fortress on the right.
Gessler, rightly fearing the resentment of the inhabitants of Uri for the reckless and violent action Sarnem has committed, requests a review of his soldiers. He would also like to send Tell's son back; but Sarnem lets him know that this hostage could win his mother's heart, whom he will undoubtedly come to claim. (00:00) It is not Hedwig who comes to claim the child; it is William at the head of a horde of villagers. (00:31) Tell demands vengeance against Sarnem, whom he accuses of trying to kidnap his wife, and demands that his son be returned to him immediately. (02:07) Gessler, confident that whatever hatred Sarnem's behavior may arouse will not fall back on himself, feigns anger with his confidant and orders him to return Jemmi to his father's arms. Sarnem pretends to ask for forgiveness: Gessler has his soldiers capture him and promises a surprising revenge to William, who returns his son.
Now that I have done you justice, Gessler says to William, you must be punished for daring to come and ask me with a weapon. (09:14) I condemn you to remove this apple from your son's head with one of your arrows. William is forced to undergo this terrible ordeal, which he overcomes. Hedwig rushes over as the apple is struck: she rushes to her son and drags him with her without anyone even thinking of arresting her. Tell, who had fainted, regains consciousness. Gessler, noticing an arrow he had hidden, demands to know what use he intended it for: "To pierce your heart, if you had killed my son," William tells him. (12:05) Gessler, outraged, has him dragged into the fortress.
