When Kampala’s skies open up, millions of litres of stormwater have just one main escape route—the Nakivubo Channel. Acting as the city’s primary stormwater artery, it drains over 95 percent of the central urban area, including the bustling business district, crowded informal settlements, and busy industrial zones. Without it, Kampala’s streets would be submerged. And we’ve all seen the floods that, from time to time, disrupt movement and even claim lives. By design, Nakivubo prevents what experts call pluvial flooding—rainfall that cannot soak into the ground. Instead, the channel directs this stormwater safely toward Lake Victoria, sparing low-lying neighbourhoods from traffic chaos, property damage, and costly economic losses.
