Kolanupaka Sri Someshwara Temple
This Shiva temple is located 82 km from Warangal and is near the famous Jain temple of Kulpak Ji. The temple is also known as the Temple of a Thousand Lingas. Decorated with beautiful sculptures and carvings, the temple is believed to have originally been built in the Chalukya style. Inscriptions found here place the temple in around 1070-1126 CE, as evidenced by various accounts of how the Chalukya kings supported the temple by donating land, gold, cows, etc. However, the present temple shows a much grander form. The Kakatiya workmanship, perhaps due to their additions/modifications/renovations, is typical of the Kakatiya period, with the pillars of the mandapa appearing square with circular discs in many parts. The huge entrance gate is also built in the Kakatiya style. The main deity of the temple is Shiva in the form of Swayambu or Someshwara Swamy, and his consort is Shakti or Devi Chandika. Inside one of the sanctum sanctorums of the temple is a huge Saharshalinga, which gives it the name of the temple of a thousand lingas. It is also believed that this is the birthplace of the great 'Veerashaiva' saint 'Renukacharya', who was born from the 'Swayambu Lingam' found in this village, and he immersed himself in it after finishing his Veerashaiva sermon. The sanctum sanctorum also houses an idol of Renukacharya along with the Swayam Lingam. In front of the temple is a four-pillared Nandi mandapa, with a Kakatiya Nandi seated inside. The temple complex also has an archaeological museum in the front pillar corridor area and this museum gallery has many magnificent sculptures from the 10th to the 14th century.
