A pressure gauge is a device used to measure the pressure of a fluid (liquid or gas) in a closed system. It works on the principle that a force exerted on a surface is transmitted equally in all directions. The basic working principle of a pressure gauge involves the use of a sensing element (such as a Bourdon tube, diaphragm, or capsule) that deforms under the influence of the fluid pressure. This deformation is then translated into a readable pressure value on a dial.
Here is an overview of the working principle of a common type of pressure gauge, the Bourdon tube pressure gauge:
1. **Bourdon Tube**: The Bourdon tube is a curved, hollow metal tube that is typically oval or coiled in shape. It is often made of materials like phosphor bronze or stainless steel.
2. **Connection to the System**: One end of the Bourdon tube is connected to the pressure source, and the other end is fixed or anchored.
3. **Pressure Application**: When the fluid pressure inside the tube increases, the tube tends to straighten or unwind due to the force applied. This deformation is proportional to the pressure of the fluid.
4. **Linkage Mechanism**: The Bourdon tube is connected to a linkage mechanism that magnifies the small movement of the tube. This mechanism typically includes gears and levers to convert the linear motion of the tube into rotational motion.
5. **Dial and Pointer**: The rotational motion is then transferred to a dial through the linkage system. The dial is marked with a scale calibrated in pressure units (such as psi, kPa, or bar). A pointer attached to the linkage system indicates the pressure value on the dial.
6. **Reading the Pressure**: As the pressure changes, the Bourdon tube deforms, causing the pointer to move across the dial, providing a visual indication of the pressure in the system.
It's important to note that there are various types of pressure gauges with different sensing elements, such as diaphragm and capsule gauges. However, the fundamental principle remains the same: the conversion of the force exerted by the fluid pressure on a deformable element into a readable pressure value.
